Almost every car I have ever had, has had a dark interior. The exceptions were a 1963 997cc Mini (light grey seats on red carpets, which of course I sold like a fool) and a 325Ti with Pistachio seats on grey carpets, which of course I sold like a fool.) Dark interiors are obviously practical. Anything rear-engined I have dabbled in has certainly had a black interior. So it was important for me to go light and fun. The two clear options, in order to at least attempt to match my exterior colour choice, was tan or dark red.
The decision between vinyl and leather was easier. 911 aficionados are familiar with the combined smell of petrol, warm oil and leather. The world is changing and I’m not sure whether I’ll get to build another rather unenvironmental petrol car. I decided not to worry about the two cows that were harmed in the making of this automobile. Leather it would be.
Tan is the safer choice. It is also more complementary to my newly dubbed Resin Racer Blau. I stood staring at my options sprawled out on the shop floor for an hour. It was agonising. I eventually decided, much to the amusement and tangible relief of everyone around. I asked the shop assistant for two tan hides. As he was busy wrapping them up, I suddenly yelled ,’wait no stop let’s go with red!’
When am I ever going to have a shot at a red interior again anyway? It’s a pretty dark red (officially ruby apparently) and looks pretty ‘retro.’ I like the contrast it creates with my carpet, which is still tan! Something very Teutonic about the combo I think.
